‘Seen Unseen’, Galeri BU, Istanbul

Last year I was fortunate to be asked to exhibit my portraits of Romanian Roma, from my ‘Satra, The Roma of Sintesti’ photography project, at the Bursa International Photography Festival, in the very beautiful city of Bursa, Turkey. The show there looked great, my work was hung in a sheltered walkway in one of the old ‘han’ merchant’s houses and courtyard. It looked great, it was very pleasing to see the work hung in such a way. (Not a manner of presentation you could do here in Glasgow, Scotland…hang your photographs outside…in the rain…)

But after the Bursa Photo Festival finished the photographic work remained in Turkey, until recently my good friend and colleague photographer Jason Eskenazi rescued my photographs, and the work of other photographers, and the work was given a new, second lease of life. Galeri BU in Galata, Istanbul, offered a space to give the work a second showing, bringing it to a new audience in the wonderful city. Sadly commitments here in Glasgow, Scotland, prevented me from seeing the Istanbul show, but this past day or so I was sent some shots showing the whole exhibition. Other photographers who work was shown included Stephen Dupont’s portraits of the Raskol ganhgs of Port Moresby Papua New Guinea, Ken Schles’s images of New York, Ken Light, Edward Keating, Antonin Kratchovil of VII Agency, Arjen Zwart, Goskin Varan, Jeffrey Wolin, and Hai Zhang.

Here’s how the latest show, at Galeri BU, Istanbul, looked… all images courtesy of Jason Eskenazi/Galeri BU. Many thanks to all who helped make this exhibition happen and come together, it’s much appreciated.

  1. I recently stumbled across your Romany photos after having a particularly intense “past life” memory. Ugh… Does that sound really crazy? There is no other way to explain it or express it… I’m sure I lived a gypsy life several times before. As I searched for pictures to soothe my obsession, I found yours. They are breathtaking in their humanity…the faces are so fascinating!
    Thank you for being you!!!!
