Tsutomu Yamaguchi, a survivor of both the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings in 1945, died on January 4th this year, aged 93.
In 2005 I was fortunate enough to sit in his garden, under a tree, and listen as Yamaguchi-san told myself and colleagues from The Times about those terrible days. You can read an earlier blog post about this encounter here.
The Economist has printed an obituary of Yamaguchi-san and included in it is one of the portraits I shot of him that day. You can see my other photographs of ‘double atomic’ bomb survivors here.
