Dylan and Bruce Davidson images

You know, you shoot a project and the pics get used, they appear here, they appear there, then for a while they fall silent. The negs sit in the neg binders, the scans sit as 0′s and 1′s. They grow cold and quiet, waiting for a chance to shine again. Then along comes a client, they need some imagery, and you think to yourself, I’ve got some pics which will fit that brief, and out they come, out come the negs back into the light, out come the pixels back onto a screen. As bright as he last time you saw them, each and every frame like a little child you’ve looked after and loved and worried over, and thought of, and cared for, and here they are with a new reason to shine, a new reason to live.

I guess that is perhaps how Bruce Davidson thought when Bob Dylan came a callin’ for his iconic Brooklyn Gang series, to use on his new album cover ‘Together Through Life’, and also a montage of Davidson’s images on the new video for the Dylan song ‘Beyond Here Lies Nothin’. I wonder what the repro fee is like for the usage of an image on a Dylan album cover , and all associated advertising, must be a pretty penny I’d imagine.

And you’ve have to admire the way an aging folk singer, or rather his PR department, use the web these days for advertising. Links to interviews all over the place, one song at a time being available for listening, now a video with share links on Amazon….all before the CD is even out. All very savvy and street smart use of the web. Gotta hand it to him. The times they are a changin’ for sure.

And talking of Beyond Here Lies Nothin’, today I went down to recession hit ghost town Toyota city, 4 trains to get there, in the dull light and rain. Toyota, so far away you’d think beyond there lies nothin’.
