Thoughts of a Tokyo, Japan-based editorial corporate portrait assignments photographer

72 Hours in Tokyo

Sitting here, killing time, watching as 58 images upload to a client’s ftp site, 58 shots of an interesting, amusing, slightly sad and disturbing story here in Tokyo. A story which over the past few days has seen me photograph a very busty 20 year old girl in an elevator, a CEO in front of a stuffed tiger, a man with a shady profession smoking a cigarette in an alleyway, and another CEO with an amusing moustache. I’ve followed people in cars, at high speed. I’ve photographed people who didn’t know they were being followed and photographed. I’ve cursed as people move into the shadows, into places too dark to be shot. I’ve sat on a pavement waiting, whilst in a nearby building the busty 20 year old has sex. I waited for her to finish so I can photograph again. I’ve sat in the back of a beautiful car, and when the tinted windows were down to let the heavy nicotine air out, I’ve drawn attention and strange looks from those that pass and notice. I’ve watched, for the second time in as many months, as a journalist I’m working with goes into a nice steakhouse restaurant for a slap up meal on expenses and I don’t. I’ve learnt a bit more about this crazy city and human nature. I’ve done another assignment. I’ve sent my 58 pictures.
