Some new links, stuff I’ve seen recently, or been emailed links to. Not all of it I’ve explored well, but I bookmarked it as I thought it might be worth a look, or it was funny….
JM Colberg always has lots of links to check out, a lot of them are not my cup of tea, all a bit too medium format, cold, European type photography, nothing much happening. But he posted an interview with Todd Hido which I enjoyed. I had seen Todd Hido’s work previously and thought it good, I like his portraits and rainy weather landscapes mroe than his houses, but a lot of great atmospheric work. Although I have to say I found some of the work on his website a bit repetitive. Perhaps dip into it in small doses. Also he talks about asking his sitters to sometimes wear wigs etc in his shoots for portraits, and it got me thinking does that picture then constitute a portrait? Who is it a portrait of? the sitter, or an actor, or a character? I’ve been thinking about this this week, not got anywhere though…
1mag3 who kindly visited TokyoLand, and made a link. Thanks very much. I enjoyed your Antoine d’Agata post if you’re still reading.
5B4, a great blog about photo books.
From David over at Kamerview who told me about this one, Exposure Compensation.
DoubleTruck magazine by Zuma Press.
A blog which has articles about the business side of this job. And let’s not forget this is a business. Sometimes too many people forget that I think, I see entries on forums/emails etc and people seem to think it’s enough just to be a bohemian and take pics and fame, fortune and Magnum will surely follow. Somehow I don’t think so. This is a business. It’s good to learn the marketing, accounting, business aspects of this job. Taking the pics is the easy bit.
When famous snappers die quite often their “last photo” is published, think of Robert Capa for instance, whose last frame is widely seen (although i couldn’t find it on a quick search now !). But Gary Gardiner goes one step further and posts his last frame shot on his website every day so his family and archivists won’t have to struggle to figure it out. Tempting fate perhaps.
Or on a day of raining cats and dogs outside my window….there is the guy who built a camera for his cat, where as he could have saved himself time and just bought one of these which have been made and are sold here in Japan for dogs to shoot with (and here).
But enough links, if you read blogs you end up going round and round in circles as we all link to each other, and inevitably bring down Web V2.0 by patting ourselves on the back so much.
Have a good weekend, hope the rain stops.
