Last night I was looking through the images which this year won the World Press Photo awards, ( just in case I had won and they’d forgotten to tell me !, but alas no…). Anyway, there are some great pics to see, a lot in the sports section I liked, and then I found this very enjoyable series, in Daily Life stories, ‘The Lonely Man’, by David Guttenfelder of Associated Press photos. Perhaps I like it as they are shot in Tokyo, or because it is nice b/w and has a real ambience to it, a real sense of a story, a make believe fairytale about a fictional character/s. I really enjoyed it.
Funny thing is today I was on an assignment and David was there, or atleast I suspected it was him but before I got a chance to introduce myself our assignment needs had taken us in seperate directions, and since starting to write this blog-post I searched his name on the internet and see his pic. So it was him, but in searching his name I also found further examples of his award winning work, and also here, and here.
I hadn’t come across his work before, so it’s enjoyable to find. I look forward to seeing him on another assignment here in Tokyo, and this time hopefully saying hello.

Yes beautifully haunting images aren`t they? I saw his lonely man pics on the Guardian site and thought about his view of Tokyo and then yours and then mine. Nice work. Hope you get to talk to him next time. I have found talking to photographers I have met when out shooting most enlightening!
Take care. Glad you`re feeling better.
