You think you have problems?

If you’re feeling a little complacent in life, or feel today that you have problems then you should watch Hubert Sauper’s award winning documentary movie ‘Darwin’s Nightmare’, soon to be your nightmare also. It’ll put your problems in perspective for you.

In the 1960′s someone released the voracious Nile Perch fish into Lake Victoria in the heart of Africa. There then followed an ecological disaster for the lake, as the voracious interloper ate all the native species. But the Nile Perch multiplied at a high speed and now villages around the lake harvest the fish on a large scale….for the dinner plates of the West, and mainly for Japan. The planes which arrive to load up tonnes of filleted fish bring with them on their inward journey tonnes of weapons for the various wars of Africa. It’s an incredibly sad story, Sauper and his minimal film team followed some Ukrainian pilots who have come to load fish, as well as interviews and scenes with local prostitutes, street kids, journalists, fish merchants, security guards and others. All are given their voice and moment, it’s well shot and written by Sauper, and in my opinion is classic documentary film making. Movies like this make me wonder about the limitations of stills, I’m not sure stills could convey what this movie does.
