As soon as I get on a plane these days to go on assignment the first thing I usually do is open the in-flight magazine to see which movies will be showing, I seem to watch more movies on planes than anywhere else these days. And then once I’ve read the magazine from cover to cover, skipping the in-flight duty free section, I usually end up sitting looking at the flight path maps to see where different airline carriers fly to, which cities, which countries. I like to see where I’ve been, and look for places to go to. I never tire of sitting looking at maps. So, recently whilst reading Digital Journalist online magazine I was pleased to find a link to Aaron Koblin’s work, using computer programmed tracking of flight paths put to music. Some of it is animated and some of it is just stills, all great work, really enjoyable to watch, like seeing a spider weave a web. There is even a still or two you can download to use as your desktop wallpaper.
The above pic is one of mine, taken on route to Kiribati atoll in the Pacific Ocean. It was an exhausting journey of 5 flights in three days to get there, and I’ve forgotten at which Pacific nation’s landing strip I took the above pic. Perhaps Nauru, or the Solomons…
